The SRA Territory Stingers Name Initial Squad for Blacksticks Showdown, Indonesian Series & MHL 2026

Hockey NT has today announced an updated Territory Stingers Men’s squad ahead of a massive campaign that includes an international showdown with the Vantage New Zealand Blacksticks, the 2025 Indonesia Series through to the 2025 Festival of Hockey, and preparations for the 2026 Malaysian Hockey League (MHL).

The squad combines emerging Northern Territory talent, returning internationals, and key senior player additions to support the program’s different demands and objectives over the next six months.

"The Indonesian Series will focus on local players, youth development, and selection assessments for the MHL. The MHL squad will be more about performance, results, and showcasing players ready for Hockey One and national opportunities." Jason Butcher, CEO and Interim Head Coach.

“The broader squad gives us the flexibility, depth, and the capacity to make the most of the upcoming opportunities and deliver on our different objectives. The Indonesian Series allows us to include Territory juniors and reintroduce experienced players to guide them. The MHL squad is where we will test and showcase players ready to perform, represent the Territory, and break into the national system.”

The Stingers will welcome eight Malaysian National players into the line-up for the match against the Blacksticks, partnering with available squad members. Additionally, four current Blacksticks will join the Stingers’ 2026 MHL campaign, strengthening both on-field impact and trans-Tasman ties.

“We’ve identified several juniors in this squad who may get the chance to make their Stingers debut against Indonesia as part of their ongoing development,” Butcher added. “We want them to see that they’re making real progress, that they’re part of this journey and should start seeing this as a genuine step in their pathway.”

A full schedule of matches will take place in late August and throughout September, including international fixtures against the Blacksticks and a five-game series against Indonesia as part of the 2025 Festival of Hockey in Darwin.

Long term Stingers leader Adrian Lockley:
“It’s such an exciting time to be a Territory Stinger! The calendar is loaded for the boys and we're backed by such an incredible coaching and support team. We’re pumped to welcome Butch back into the coaching lineup and can't wait to showcase our talent against international teams in front of a huge home crowd.”

Black Sticks International and Territorian, Leon Hayward:
“I’m incredibly excited to step into this player-coach role with the SRA Territory Stingers, and I can’t wait to share my international experience, both on and off the field, to help young Territory players reach their full potential and gain national recognition. The prospect of the Territory playing a series against New Zealand, a country I love very much and that has done so much for me, in Darwin where I grew up, would be truly special for me. It will be a deeply proud and special moment for me to return to Darwin and represent where I'm from, and I continue to be grateful to SRA and to Mindil Beach Casino Resort for their support and investment into young Territorians. I’d like to thank them, and everyone involved, for helping our kids achieve their goals and take the next step in hockey, in sport, and in life through this initiative.”
