The Territory Stingers have been officially announced as members of the Malaysian Hockey League (MHL) for the next four years. The announcement was made by Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) President, Dato’ Sri Subahan, during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
As part of this landmark agreement, the Stingers will base themselves in Kuala Lumpur for their inaugural season to accommodate an adjusted schedule. The tournament has been brought forward to align with Ramadan, resulting in a challenging competition format for the Stingers. The season is set to run from January 4 to February 22, with the Stingers embarking on an ambitious campaign to play all their games over a tight three-week period in February, beginning with their first round match on February 5.
If the Stingers men or women make the Grand final they will have to play 12 games in three weeks with their 25 player squads.
Hockey NT CEO Jason Butcher expressed his confidence in the Stingers’ ability to embrace this extraordinary opportunity, emphasising the team’s determination to meet this audacious challenge. “This is a transformative moment for the Stingers and for hockey in the Northern Territory,” he said. “Joining the Malaysian Hockey League is a unique and significant opportunity. Tackling this demanding schedule is another opportunity to highlight the resilience, spirit, and unique culture of the Northern Territory that we proudly represent.”
The Stingers’ inclusion in the MHL strengthens regional and international hockey ties and reaffirms the Northern Territory’s commitment to nurturing talent on a global stage. MHC President Dato’ Sri Subahan warmly welcomed the Stingers to the league, stating, “The Stingers bring fresh energy and a unique perspective to the MHL.
Their participation enhances our reputation as a premier hockey competition in the region. We look forward to their impact both on and off the field.”
At the press conference, Jason Butcher highlighted the shared challenges faced by Hockey NT and the MHC in striving for success within their respective environments. He underscored that this partnership would foster mutual growth and strengthen both organisations. Dato’ Sri Subahan also announced plans for future collaboration, including developing a joint submission by Hockey NT and the MHC to enter the Hockey One League in Australia, further solidifying the bond between the two hockey communities.
The Territory Stingers’ debut in the Malaysian Hockey League marks an exciting new chapter for hockey fans in both nations and across the region.
