Community Coach Qualification
The Community Coach training program is designed to train coaches in the basic concepts of coaching including group management and organisation, conducting modified games, and activity safety and enjoyment.
It is an enjoyable and straightforward training program involving an online learning session, an applied learning quiz and a practical evaluation.
Who should become a Community Coach?
The program is directed towards teachers, parents and other new coaches who are involved in Hookin2Hockey and modified versions of the game.
The Community Coach training program can be accessed as an educational resource for currently accredited individuals, as well as being a training requirement for those wishing to obtain their Community Coach accreditation.
How to get the qualification
The Community Coach program is in two parts:
- Hockey specific online training program – includes an applied learning quiz which takes approximately half an hour to an hour to complete.
- A practical evaluation of one session as a coach (45 mins minimum).

Level 1 Coach Qualification
The Level 1 Coach training program is designed to train coaches in the fundamental concepts of coaching, including group management and organisation, developing effective training sessions, performing the role of match-day coach, and ensuring the safety and enjoyment of players.
Who should become a Level 1 Coach?
The program is directed towards teachers, parents, players and coaches who are involved in coaching modified versions of the game or beginner level club hockey.
The Level 1 Coach training program can be accessed as an educational resource for currently accredited individuals, as well as being a training requirement for those wishing to obtain their Level 1 Coach accreditation.
How to get the qualification
There is no pre-requisite qualification needed to undertake the Level 1 Coach training program.
1. View Competencies – To gain a Level 1 Coach accreditation you must be able to demonstrate the required competencies.
2. Register Here – Register for an account on our learning platform HockeyEd. There is a registration fee of $50 to complete the Level 1 Coach program. The Level 1 Coach program is in three parts:
- Community Coaching General Principles online course developed by the Australia Sports Commission (ASC). This takes between two and five hours to complete.
- A practical evaluation of one training session and one match as a coach.
- A one-day practical course, conducted by your state or territory hockey association.
The three parts can be completed in any order and in your own time. You will need to submit evidence of completion for the ASC Community Coaching General Principles online course to Hockey NT Pathways.
Level 2 Coach Qualification
The Level 2 Coach program is designed to train coaches in the essential concepts of coaching, including planning and conducting training sessions, match-day role, hockey skills and tactics, playing styles and structures, junior development, communication, risk management, and ethical responsibilities.
It is a comprehensive training program involving seminars, pre- and post-seminar requirements, and a practical assessment.
Who should become a Level 2 Coach?
The program is directed towards coaches involved in the higher levels of club, school or representative hockey.
How to get the qualification
Candidates for the Level 2 Coach qualification must hold a valid Level 1 Coach qualification.

2. Register Here – Register for an account on our learning platform HockeyEd. Level 2 Coach contains online benefits and the Level 2 Coach program participant pack. Note that your login also allows you access to all HockeyEd coaching secure pages below this level. There is a registration fee of $50 to complete the Level 2 Coach program.
Pre and post seminar requirements are outlined on the Membership page. There are four presentations in the Level 2 course as listed below. Only ‘Manage Self’ is presented on-course at the same time as the practical component. The other three presentations should be completed online. A short test follows each.
The seminars cover four modules:
- Manage Self (on-course)
- Manage Athletes (online)
- Manage Others (online)
- Manage Environment (online)
The practical assessment requires the coach to attend a two-day practical session course as well as demonstrate the competencies outlined on the practical competency checklist during a maximum of two training sessions and two hockey matches. Evidence of competencies needs to be shown at the higher levels of club, school or representative hockey as a minimum
Advanced Coach Qualification
The Advanced Coach training program is designed to train coaches in the advanced concepts of coaching including self-management skills, skill and tactical development, playing styles and structures, player and team analysis, sports science and communication skills.
It is a comprehensive and challenging training program involving presentations by experts, workshop activities, applied learning, self-development requirements and significant pre and post course work.
Who should become an Advanced Coach?
The Advanced Coach qualification is for anyone who meets the criteria outlined below and wishes to further enhance their coaching knowledge and practice.
How to get the qualification
Candidates for the Advanced Coach qualification must hold a valid Level 2 Coach qualification or Recognition of Current Competency to Level 2 Coach level.

2. Register your interest with Pathways.
The Advanced Coach Program is conducted by Hockey Australia in conjunction with the States and Territories when there are sufficient candidates in the State or Territory.
